Why exclusive distribution protects a wooden toy brand

Premium wooden toys live or die by how they are presented and priced. Here is why we believe one committed partner per market beats several loosely connected ones – and what a manufacturer should ask before signing.

1. One price level, one brand story

When several importers bring the same brand into a small market, they usually end up competing on the only thing they can: price. The result is familiar – discounting, unhappy specialist shops, and a premium brand that slowly starts to look like a commodity. With one distributor, there is one price structure across channels, and retailers can invest in the brand without fearing that a competitor will undercut them next month.

2. Protection against grey imports

Exclusivity alone does not stop parallel imports – but it gives someone a reason and the responsibility to watch the market, talk to retailers and flag problems early. A distributor who carries a brand non-exclusively has little incentive to do that work.

3. A single accountable partner for compliance

Under EU rules, safety and traceability are shared responsibilities across the supply chain. A dedicated distributor checks CE marking and documentation, makes sure warnings and instructions are available in the local language, keeps records for traceability and is the clear point of contact for authorities. For the manufacturer, that means one partner to coordinate with instead of several.

4. Real investment in the market

Building a wooden toy brand takes work that pays off slowly: educating teachers, supporting shops with content, attending events, translating catalogues. A distributor will only make that investment if the results stay with them. Exclusivity turns market building from a cost into an investment – for both sides.

5. Your brand voice, unchanged

Good distribution amplifies the manufacturer’s identity rather than replacing it. In practice, that means using the manufacturer’s official images, videos and catalogues, and not running local campaigns that contradict the brand’s positioning.

Questions to ask a prospective distributor
  • How many brands do you represent – and how much attention will mine get?
  • Which channels do you serve, and how do you keep prices consistent across them?
  • How do you handle labelling, documentation and product safety obligations?
  • What will you report back to us, and how often?
  • What is your plan for the first year – and what are you not promising?
